"British trapper Oliver Reed arrives at a trading post in 1850's British Columbia to sell his furs and buy a wife. Having missed the annual 'auction' of bondmaidens, he purchases mute orphan girl Rita Tushingham and drags the panic-stricken girl to his cabin in the wilderness and tries to win her affections by bullying and cajoling and, when that fails, threatening her. But she remains antagonistic and unresponsive - until she has to save his life when he is caught in one of his own traps."
