The Necking Bench by Day Milman

“...Framed by voluminous leaves of the vitis coignetiae plant, the bench is its own space apart from the rest of the garden, apart from the mundane aspects of metro, boulou, dodo, a magical space in a small domestic garden in the midst of a busy city...."

"Upon arrival, I realized the work of the Necking Bench had already been achieved just by the proposal...building it seemed redundant.

Obsessed as I am by weather, I thought filling the back yard with clouds or fog would be nice. Yvette had similar ideas, so we worked as friendly giants rolling clouds across the yard, making the shed float by our whims.

Then I shrank the Necking Bench down and built it on the kitchen table during the football highlights."

Day (Toronto) was an official resident in This Neck of the Woods from November 21st-28th, 2006.

Day's journey to TNOTW was made possible with the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts - InterArts.

Amidst the drone of constant busy-ness, the Necking Bench provides a private space for the newly illicit acts of loving, thinking and dreaming, a platform for pleasure and indulgence away from prying eyes that condemn the live act, but live for its representation in their nightly draught of tv.... Like love, the Necking Bench is subject to the vicissitudes and ravages of time, circumstance, and weather....”
