Knock on Woods with Izumi Sakamoto

Izumi Sakamoto used leaves from the local site to create an installation while Knocking on Woods. While other residents have used the tent-cabin and site as an actual shelter or concept site, Izumi's installation made the cabin disappear as though it were only a portal to a nether world. Her installation played with the light from the ceiling of the KOW tent-cabin and transformed the interior space into a hidden exterior. In a kind of embroidery work, her leaves had the effect of a waterfall turning the world insideout. This installation made me think of the film Dreams by Akira Kurosawa (I am refering to the chapter "Sunshine Through the Rain" and not "The Crows" in which Martin Scorcese plays Vincent van Gogh!)

Using the "official box next to the bed" lid as a tray, Izumi performed a tea ceremony at the Knock on Woods site.

Izumi Sakamoto was an official resident Knocking on Woods at Kaus Australis in Rotterdam on 23 August 2007.
