Knock on Woods with Caroline Boileau

(The following quotes come from the original proposal Caroline sent to the resident technician to participate in Knock on Woods.)

"Summer is here now. I truly enjoy living in Montreal but when at the cottage by the lake 45 KM away, I collect dragonfly larvae in the morning, watch the newly transformed dragonflies eat mosquitoes in the afternoon and run after fireflies after sunset. From early June to late August, I don’t give Montreal a second thought. I am here now, in my mouldy cottage, sitting in the dark, listening to enamoured bullfrogs while reading your call for proposals again. Knock on Woods has the flavour of this place but it is to be held in Montreal at the end of the summer, making me feel as though I should find an in-between space, an in-between idea or project, linking city and countryside together."

"I admit it. I originally read your call for proposal quite fast and read parasite instead of para-site. I was so excited by this idea that when I discovered my mistake, I wasn’t able to turn back! Parasite is a sticky word implying both peaceful and harmful modes of cohabitation. It seems (perhaps too) obvious that I would set my sights on flies, the big fat sticky kind, city flies. But summer is here and this is THE season to enjoy frivolous books and bask in the sun, so please bear with me."

"How would I go about catching flies, you ask? Well, I would test a variety of sweet concoctions such as melted Belgian chocolate, grenadine syrup, molasses, maple syrup, cherry jam and (why not) a sweet alcoholic drink, all set up in attractive flasks and vessels. Oh! And there is also that mixture of molasses and beer that attracts nocturnal butterflies… surely it would work on straight ones too. The methodology of the experiment is simple."
